Meeting the bloggers

mypajama.com is all about storytelling. Stories and essays are published at an alarmingly infrequent rate. Subscribe with RSS or via email.

At about ten in the night on Saturday, I was at Carter Road, Bandra, swaying in the sea wind and telling my friends how my day went. I mentioned the bloggers’ meet (but naturally).

“Who all came?” asked one.

“Well there was Amit Varma, Sakshi Juneja, Akshay Mahajan and others.” I tentatively pull out the attendance sheet (my gift, my burden) from my pocket and hold it open for them to see. No effect.

“Who are they?”

I begin to wonder if we shouldn’t start talking about the quality of the dosa we were stuffing our mouths with.

“They are all losers like him,” a third one chimes in with a grin.

I stuff my face and look seawards, letting the wind to do good things to my hair.

Seven hours earlier

I glide up the Infiniti Mall escalator thinking I am not very late. The organisers will be there. They are there. Along with a somewhat chirpy Divya. I grin. In spite of having been to four bloggers’ meets before this (one in Mumbai and three in Chennai), I am still never at ease when making first contact with screen names and hyperlinks. Especially when there are more than one of them.

Soon bloggers start materialising out of nowhere. The table changes shape, then size, then disappears entirely and we find ourselves in the middle of the place around a giant piece of improvised furniture.

Introductions fly around and many madhur milans take place. I watch. Talking to fifteen people at once is so not my bucket of coffee. But listen I can. I beam in glee (thankfully nobody notices) and shift seats twice during my couple of hours there. Once to stand by and watch the pro-anti reservation battle in the far north. Once to find allies among the fellow nerds at the other end of the world.

Among other faces re-discovered were Evenstar (coming soon: her real name!) and Vulturo (his real name isn’t as much fun as this one). Then there was Gera in a t-shirt that made sure only programmers would ever approach him and say, “Got a light friend?”

Anupam was the oldest one there and he has two blogs. Something I have never managed to maintain.

More have written on this here, here, here, here, here , here and here.

I wish I could write more about Ideasmith, Parijat, Piyush, Anthony, Selvin, and Zack. But my super hearing detects a twelve year old in Nigeria cornered by man eating morlocks. Away I must!

*disappears in a blaze of white light* (Flying is so inefficient. I am all for teleportation.)

Gosh you were so cute when I first met you - this little boy sitting all quite & shy & not saying a word…!!!

You’ve changed the tag line of your blog - but I remember at the time it was “No questions asked, no answers given” and it suited you to a T!!

Sorry I missed this meet up. Next time!
