Your very own God

“Everywhere O Bharata, faith is in accordance with one’s nature. A person’s faith is according to his nature.” [Bhagwad Gita, Chapter 17, Verse 3]

Everyone tells me there is One God. That we are all actually are worshipping that One God by different names. That it is the different names that are the cause of all the strife in our world.

On being shameless

Have you noticed how the whole shameful-shameless equation makes no sense? A shameless person, by definition, is without any shame. Now, shameless may not be a swearword, but as far as I know, it is definitely not a compliment. Oddly, nor is the concept of shame.

By that logic, if shame is an undesirable, shouldn’t shameless be the opposite?

Doing the ‘life’ thing

Try this. Pick up a copy of Po Bronson’s ‘What should I do with my life?‘ and go sit somewhere you can’t go unnoticed. Pretend to be extremely interested in the book. Actually, after a few minutes, you wouldn’t really be pretending, but that is beside the point.

You will soon find that passers-by can’t help trying to spy the name of the book. Make it easy for them. Hold the book out a little, making the cover more accessible to prying eyes. But don’t be too obvious about it.

Why do we hate bigots?

Man is the only animal that laughs and weeps, for he is the only animal that is struck with the difference between what things are and what they ought to be. — William Hazlitt

Everyone loves to hate bigots. It is the sign of forward-thinking individuals. Proof that your world view is more inclusive than the narrow-minded fanatic who has merited your dislike.

Tolerant, are we?

I will always remember the first time I flew. I remember it as if it happened yesterday — even though it was actually a week or so ago.

Ten minutes into the flight, I had decided I was never going to fly again. I hated the heights and I hated looking out of the window. Why couldn’t everyone just close their windows? I had closed mine!

There is a joke in the movie Hollow Man that involves Superman, Wonder Woman and a certain invisible man. I understand it is amusing but I have never quite been able to laugh at it. There are some things I don’t make fun of (mostly) and Superman is one of them.

The storyteller’s job

A writer lives, at least, in a state of astonishment. Beneath any feeling he has of the good or evil of the world lies a deeper one of wonder at it all. To transmit that feeling, he writes.William Sansom

Does the storyteller lie when he tells a story? Of course he does. But, does he really? Most stories are lies in that they never happened. Are we, then a self-delusional race?
