On being shameless

Have you noticed how the whole shameful-shameless equation makes no sense? A shameless person, by definition, is without any shame. Now, shameless may not be a swearword, but as far as I know, it is definitely not a compliment. Oddly, nor is the concept of shame.

By that logic, if shame is an undesirable, shouldn’t shameless be the opposite?

Why do we hate bigots?

Man is the only animal that laughs and weeps, for he is the only animal that is struck with the difference between what things are and what they ought to be. — William Hazlitt

Everyone loves to hate bigots. It is the sign of forward-thinking individuals. Proof that your world view is more inclusive than the narrow-minded fanatic who has merited your dislike.

In God’s shoes

This is a flaky analogy at best, but interesting nevertheless. I got to thinking about creation and God. I believe something created us. Opinions vary as to who or what it was and whether the decision was a wise one or not. Some doubt it was a conscious decision and wonder if we are an accident.

But even so, I wonder why creation has to be a downstream process. Sample this:

Tree at the end of time

A week or so ago, a thought entered my head. It was about fruits. About their shape actually. Most of them are vague spheroids. Somewhat rough on the outside, even spiky sometimes. The man who first thought of biting into an apple or a pineapple must have been on the brink of desperation. Either that, or they weren’t very discerning back then and ate everything with utter abandon.

But as any detective worth his/her hat and overcoat would tell you, exceptions are the answers to all life’s questions. Think unwieldy fruit. Think exception. Aha!

My grandfather is a time traveller

I don’t think he knows about it, which leaves only me in possession of this potentially terrifying secret. I say potential because there is only so much an 86-year-old can do to alter history and cause planetwide mayhem.

Now that we are on secret-sharing terms, a bit about my grandfather: He is OLD, like… ancient. Is HARD of hearing. Can’t see very well (make that not-at-all) at night.

He also forgets a lot. I am not too sure about that anymore. I suspect I have been wrong all along.

Herowork and other work

If I were a medical man, I should prescribe a holiday to any patient who considered his work important.

– From The Autobiography of Bertrand Russell

Funny! The ‘book of quotations’ I took this from tags Bertrand Russell a controversialist. Those were the days! You could make a career out of being controversial. It would be, if nothing else, stimulating. Think of the rush that would come upon you with all the death threats, imagine the excitement of possible banishment from your country, not to mention the infamy.
