News in red

mypajama.com is all about storytelling. Stories and essays are published at an alarmingly infrequent rate. Subscribe with RSS or via email.

There is something unsettling about the news we see. Why is it all in red? NDTV has for long painted the screen scarlet, but then Aaj Tak went red and Times Now too and also CNN IBN.

Is the reason the traditional Indian one? That of not being gutsy enough to stray from what everyone else has been doing? (Damn, I generalised again. Sorry!) Or is red supposed to be a more newsie colour? I don’t know. It certainly puts me off. I would like to see at least one channel doing it with neat and clean shades (black text on white would be good, even the newsflashes and the tickers are red for God’s sake!).

One of my other concerns has something to with tag lines. What’s with the likes of “Whatever it takes” and “Feel the news“. They make it sound like they have no clue what news is. I don’t pretend to be a guru but at least Aaj Tak’s “Sabse Tez” makes sense (forget the technicalities).

  1. Red and blue are supposed to be the most camera-friendly colours. I should know as I have quite a few friends indoctrinated in the practised concepts of the broadcast game.

  2. Superman was made for TV ?? !!

I refuse to believe that !
