Taare Zameen Par: 5 days

mypajama.com is all about storytelling. Stories and essays are published at an alarmingly infrequent rate. Subscribe with RSS or via email.

Day 1: One gets a call from one’s teacher, highly recommending Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par. One watches the movie with friends and is happy to note that he is not the only one crying.

Later that day, one chews on the movie for long and is thankful for his childhood. His tinkering and doodling was tolerated.

Day 2: One makes mother and aunt watch the movie. Much to one’s relief, mother cries and they hug each other as Shankar Mahadevan sings, ‘kya itna bura hoon main ma?

One is told that the first time his vegetarian mother actually killed a mosquito was to protect him.

Day 3: One fiercely recommends the movie to three friends and five acquaintances. The birthday is spent humming, ‘tujhe sab hai pata, hai na ma?’ until Manoj and Pratap arrive in the evening. On the way to Barabati stadium for Biryani, one is threatened that he will be thrown off the rickshaw if he doesn’t stop singing, ‘teri parwah karta hoon main ma’. One is surprised. One thinks he sings well.

Day 4: One is delirious. Fanboyish enthusiasm oozes out of one’s ears. Mobile phone and computer alike have TZP wallpaper. One starts cracking jokes like:

What did the bank robber shout as soon as he entered the bank?
Saare Zameen Par!

One is told his sense of humour sucks. One is used to it.

Day 5: One remembers being a bully once in school to a boy he now suspects of being dyslexic. He spends the day in remorse.

One buys the soundtrack to get the humming in his head over with. It doesn’t work. It is past midnight and he is still listening to ‘…andhere se darta hoon main ma‘. Mother went to sleep an hour ago. He decides to write his head out.

  1. Sigh… the song does get stuck in the head doesn’t it… Good movie…

  2. Nicely written and yes, no doubt the movie is lovely!

  3. Is this the story of 5 days in the life of the “One” from the Matrix?

    I haven’t watched TZP yet… sigh!

  4. Ah!! The talented Mr. Mohanty has a funny bone too! Is there no end to your talents??!

Trust you’re well & warm in capital city :)

  5. I loved the mosquito bit. One, too, watched it with mother and would-be mother in law and her daughter. At the theatre, one sadistically tried taking mobile shots of crying faces while the song was on before realising that his own face was the same. Heh.

  6. My children made me watch this. Even they loaded it onto my PC, an action on their part that implies something very significant. So, it is in their interest that I should watch this, and more than me, my wife should. Clever they’re, the children of these days: they know how to reduce the propensity of the elders to nag them!

  8. Nice. I am sure everybody cried while watching TZP which means I did too. Cheers to Aamir for making such a meaningful movie! Double cheers to you for this unique piece of writing!
